Parents and scientists alike, are beginning to recognize what our ancestors already knew; the vital importance for young children to spend time outdoors, in the wild, and to discover the world through unrestricted play and curiosity. Children’s innate curiosity for nature brings about connection, and learning naturally follows in their own unique rhythm. Sassafras’ nature connection mentors truly listen to their stories and help deepen experiences.

Children will move their bodies, wander and explore, take on responsibilities, practice fine motor skills, do hands-on projects, tell their own stories, make up songs, and play to their heart's content. As Richard Louv’ points out, we need vitamin “N” (Nature time) to become whole and Sassafras offers unlimited nature time in a structure that can be compared with the setting of a small village.

This is an all-outdoors program with seasonal learning and activities that will include learning about and participating in our LandCulture Project, beginning earth and ancestral skills, harvest and outdoor processing, naturalist skills, and natural and Indigenous history. Activities to quiet the mind, to learn how to tap into our inner knowing, and following a natural and relaxed pace of our day together are vital. Children will spend time in a mixed age group, and a portion of the day in smaller groups according to age.

Youth need to be dressed for the weather (on rainy days in full rain gear, on colder days in snow-suits, waterproof boots, wool socks, hats, gloves) for a full day of reconnecting to your wild side! Bring a lunch, snack and water bottle in a day pack.

  • Dates: Fall Series of 8 Fridays rain or shine:
    Sept 30, Oct 7, 14, 21, 28, Nov 4, 11, 18, 2022
